The basics

What Is a Custom Balloon Installation?

When the piece hangs overhead, spans the room, takes a recognizable shape or carries a brand, we call it an installation.

A custom balloon installation is designed for one specific space and assembled on-site, and it's usually bigger or more structural than an arch, garland or column. Picture a ceiling of balloons above a dance floor, a cloud floating over a sweetheart table, a 30 ft arch across a storefront, a giant mosaic number, a walk-through tunnel, or a logo built in balloons for a product launch. This is the point where balloon decor turns into balloon art.

Since each one is made for a particular room, installations begin with measurements and a design rather than a price list. They make sense when the space is large, the event is high-profile, or you want something your guests haven't already seen on their feed. For standard pieces, start with balloon arches, garlands, walls, columns and backdrops.

What we install

Types of Custom Balloon Installations

These are the installations LA hosts, venues and brands ask us about most.

Balloon ceilings

A balloon ceiling fills the space above the guests. It can be helium balloons pressed against the ceiling with ribbons trailing down, air-filled balloons hung upside down at staggered heights, or garlands swagged from wall to wall. A plain hall, gym or warehouse becomes an event space overnight, which is why ceilings are booked for proms, quinceañeras, weddings and holiday parties.

Hanging balloons, canopies and chandeliers

Swags suspended over a banquet table, a canopy stretched above the dance floor or a tent, and balloons wound around a chandelier (or a hoop chandelier made entirely of balloons) put the decor up high and keep the floor clear. Backyard pergolas and patio beams make handy anchor points.

Balloon clouds

A balloon cloud is a soft, drifting mass of white and clear balloons, sometimes with a touch of pastel or metallic, suspended over a table or used as a backdrop. Baby showers, "cloud nine" themes and dreamy wedding setups use them most.

Balloon drops

A balloon drop lets hundreds of balloons fall from a net or bag overhead at one exact moment: the New Year's Eve countdown, a gender reveal, a grand entrance, the end of a graduation or a launch reveal. The net is rigged before guests arrive and released with a pull cord by our crew or your emcee on cue.

Balloon sculptures and balloon art

Sculptures take a recognizable form: an oversized number, a cake, a pineapple, a surfboard, a mascot, a product or a logo. Balloon art pieces for galleries, schools, pop-ups and brand activations can be built life-size or larger.

Balloon trees, palm trees and topiaries

Palm trees made of balloons for pool days and luaus, clipped-look topiaries for formal dinners, and Christmas trees for lobbies all stand on their own, a lot like balloon columns finished with a shape.

Balloon tunnels

Set several arches close together and you get a tunnel guests walk through. It makes a memorable wedding entrance, school walkway, fun-run finish line or store-opening entry.

Balloon mosaics, number towers and marquee letters

A mosaic is a number, letter or shape frame packed with small balloons in a pattern, almost like a pixel image. Mosaic numbers and letters spell an age, an initial or a class year, and marquee letters wrapped in balloons add a warm glow. They're a popular pick for birthdays and graduations.

Balloon wreaths and giant balloons

A balloon wreath dresses a front door or circles an easel. Oversized balloons of 36 inches and up, many of them confetti-filled, are made for proposals, gender reveals and creator shoots.

Process

How a Custom Installation Comes Together

Bigger builds need a bit more planning up front. This is how we handle it.

  1. 1

    Brief

Share the event, the date, the venue and what you're picturing. Mood boards, inspiration photos and brand guidelines all help.

  2. 2

    Site details

We confirm dimensions, ceiling height, rigging points, power, load-in times, freight elevator access, parking and venue rules, by walkthrough or from your photos and measurements.

  3. 3

    Design and quote

You receive a design plan and a written quote. Large installs are priced by scope, not by the foot.

  4. 4

    Build day

We load in during your venue's window, build on-site and walk the finished space with you before doors open.

  5. 5

    Strike

We break everything down at the end of the night or the next morning, depending on the venue's rules.

Venue rules worth asking about early: hotels and event venues around Los Angeles commonly set strict load-in and strike windows, ask vendors to carry liability insurance and send a certificate of insurance, limit helium tanks, prohibit tape on walls and require approval before anything hangs from the ceiling. Downtown lofts often run freight elevators on fixed hours, and rooftop venues may cap how much weight can come up. We check all of it before quoting, so build day goes smoothly.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Installations Cost in Los Angeles?

Custom installations start at $550 and grow with the size and complexity of the build.

Large installs are quoted after a site check. Venue load-in requirements, after-hours strike and paid parking or freight-elevator fees can add to the total.

What sets an installation's price: the area or length covered, how many balloons and what sizes, rigging and lift needs (ceiling height matters a lot), helium, crew hours, overnight or after-hours load-in, the venue's insurance requirements and same-night strike. Send the venue and ceiling height with your quote request and we'll scope it properly.

Timing

Lead Times: When to Book Your Installation

Give large installations three to six weeks.

A mosaic number or a balloon drop in someone's living room can usually be lined up with one to two weeks' notice. Ceilings, tunnels, sculptures and anything at a hotel, studio or event venue need three to six weeks for design, venue sign-off and ordering custom-color balloons. December weekends, New Year's Eve, Lunar New Year, prom season in spring and graduation season from late May into June fill up first.

Questions

Custom Balloon Installations in Los Angeles: FAQ

How much do balloon installations cost in Los Angeles?

With us, custom installs begin at $550, 3 ft mosaic numbers at $250 and marquee letter rentals at $60 apiece. Ceilings, drops, tunnels and sculptures get their own quote once we know the size, the rigging and the crew hours involved.

What is a balloon ceiling?

It's decor that covers the area above your guests. That can mean helium balloons resting against the ceiling with ribbons dangling, air-filled balloons suspended at staggered heights, or garlands draped in swags from one side of the room to the other.

What is a balloon drop?

It's a net or bag of hundreds of balloons hung above the crowd and opened at a set moment, such as midnight on New Year's Eve, a gender reveal, the couple's entrance or the final song.

How many balloons go into a balloon drop?

In a living room or small private room, 100 to 250 is plenty. Over a ballroom dance floor, plan on 500 to 1,500 or more. The footprint of the drop and how high the ceiling is decide the number.

What is a balloon mosaic?

It's a frame cut in the shape of a number, a letter or a symbol, stuffed with small balloons so the colors form a pattern, almost like pixels. Birthdays, graduations and anniversaries use them to show off an age, an initial or a year.

How long do ceiling balloons last?

Helium balloons on a ceiling stay at their best for roughly 8–12 hours, so we fill them on event day. Hung installs made with air keep their shape for several days indoors.

When should I book a custom balloon installation?

Allow three to six weeks for anything large or venue-based, such as ceilings, tunnels and sculptures. A mosaic number or a living-room balloon drop can usually be arranged with one to two weeks' notice.

Do venues allow balloon installations?

Generally yes, with house rules attached. Expect requests for a certificate of insurance, fixed load-in and strike times, and limits on helium tanks, wall tape and ceiling rigging. We get those details from the venue before we price anything.

Do you release balloons outdoors?

No. Balloon releases harm wildlife, and loose foil balloons can tangle in power lines and cause outages. California law requires helium foil balloons to be weighted, and every helium piece we build stays tethered or indoors.

What is balloon art?

The term covers sculptural and large-scale designed work in balloons: oversized logos, characters, objects and room-filling installs. A balloon twister making animals at a kids' party is a different craft entirely.
