The basics
Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars: What They Are
Columns, towers, pillars and posts all describe the same thing: balloons stacked up a pole that's anchored in a weighted base.
Because a balloon column stands by itself at about 5 to 8 feet, it can go nearly anywhere: both sides of a front gate, each end of a stage, along a ceremony aisle, the corners of a dance floor or beside a booth. No piece of balloon decor is more flexible, and none adds height to a room faster without anything being hung.
Columns are also the cheapest way to mark an entrance. A pair costs less than a full balloon arch, and you can always connect the tops with a garland later to get the classic arch-and-columns look used at school dances and store openings.
Column styles
Balloon Column Styles
The pole and base never change. The pattern of balloons wrapped around them does.
Classic stacked columns
Four-balloon clusters packed tightly up the pole, all one color or in solid bands. Bold, tidy and the lowest-cost column we build.
Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)
Shift the colors one position in each cluster and they corkscrew up the column. Two colors look crisp, three colors (red, white and blue for the Fourth, or blue, white and gold for a graduate) are the most popular, and four colors work for rainbow and multi-team themes.
Organic balloon columns
Loose clusters of mixed balloon sizes give a fuller, softer column that matches an organic arch or garland. They take more balloons, so they cost more than classic columns, and they're what most couples and shower hosts choose now.
Themed and novelty columns
A column can be shaped into almost anything: a palm tree for a luau or a pool day, a surfboard-topped column for a beach party, a pencil for back-to-school, a candy column for a sweets theme, or a Christmas tree for a holiday lobby. Themed columns are the fun option for kids' parties and school hallways.

Toppers
Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers
The topper is the part that makes the column about your celebration.
- Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number for an age, an anniversary year or a class year. It's the column we're asked for most.
- Stars, hearts and crowns: foil shapes for grads, Valentine's Day, quinceañeras and debuts.
- Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble balloon filled with confetti or feathers.
- Grad caps and diplomas: for grad parties and senior nights.
- Logo or letter panels: for launches, pop-ups and store openings.
Sizing
Balloon Column Heights, and the Balloon Count for Each
A standard column stands about 6 feet tall before the topper goes on.
| Column | Height | Balloons (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Mini or tabletop | 2–3 ft | 12–20 |
| Standard classic or spiral | 5–6 ft | 40–60 (11-inch) |
| Tall classic | 7–8 ft | 60–80 (11-inch) |
| Organic | 5–7 ft | 60–100+ (mixed sizes) |
Counts cover the body of the column. The topper, the base and any clusters at the foot add a handful more.
What size balloons make a column? Most use 11-inch latex in clusters of four, which produces a column roughly 18–20 inches wide. Organic columns mix in 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.
Pricing
How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in Los Angeles?
A single column usually lands between $95 and $300, depending on the style and the topper.
| Column | Starting at |
|---|---|
| Mini tabletop column | $65 |
| Classic column | $95 |
| Spiral column (2–4 colors) | $120 |
| Themed column (graduation, holiday) | $160 |
| Organic column | $185 |
| Balloon tower with number or star topper | $210 |
Prices are per column, delivered and placed in our core Los Angeles service area.
How much do balloon towers cost for a pair? Since most doorways get two, budget roughly $190–$600 for a pair, depending on the style. Pairs are priced below two singles, and adding an arch between them costs less than ordering the arch and columns separately.
Placement
Where Balloon Columns Go
Columns shine in pairs, with something worth looking at between them.
Entrances
Either side of a front door, a courtyard gate, a venue door or a shopfront, so nobody wonders where the party is.
Stages and DJ booths
One at each end of a stage or DJ table keeps the speakers and performers framed in every shot.
Wedding aisles
Short columns lining the aisle, or a tall pair marking where the couple will stand.
Dance floors
Columns on the corners of the floor, sometimes linked overhead by a garland canopy.
Booths and activations
Brand-color columns help a booth or pop-up stand out from across a convention hall or a busy sidewalk.
Gyms and school halls
Rows of columns in school colors for graduation, prom, homecoming and senior night.
Occasions
Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays
Late May and June, when LA's high schools and universities graduate, is peak season for columns, but they suit almost any party.
- Graduation: columns and towers in school colors with a grad cap, a star or the class year, for grad parties, prom and senior night.
- Weddings and bridal showers: ivory and gold or blush organic columns at the ceremony and the reception.
- Birthdays: a column with the age up top, from first birthdays to 60ths.
- Gender reveals: pink and blue columns crowned with a question-mark balloon.
- Brand events and trade shows: columns in brand colors for booths, lobbies, launches and openings.
- Holidays: Christmas, Halloween, Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, Easter and red, white and blue for the Fourth of July.
- Quinceañeras and debuts: a pair of columns framing the court's grand entrance.
Outdoor columns
Outdoor Balloon Columns in Los Angeles Weather
A column is tall, narrow and top-heavy, which makes it the first thing wind goes after. Outdoor columns are built for that.
- Outdoor columns sit on heavier bases and get tied off to a fence, post or railing whenever one is close by.
- In beach cities like Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, the afternoon breeze picks up after lunch, so we brace columns for it.
- On Santa Ana days, mostly from fall into early spring, we'll suggest moving columns to the sheltered side of the house or indoors.
- Shade still matters: inland summer sun fades and pops latex within a few hours, and dark colors heat up fastest.
- For shopfronts on busy boulevards, columns go where the building blocks the wind and the sidewalk stays clear for foot traffic.
Longevity
How Long Will Balloon Columns Last?
Several days indoors. A few hours in hot, direct sun.
Air-filled and indoors with climate control, a balloon column keeps its shape for several days and often a week. Outside in shade, expect about a day. In direct summer sun in the Valley or the San Gabriel Valley, columns start to oxidize and pop within a few hours. For indoor events they can be built one to two days early, which helps with morning graduations and school assemblies.

Questions
Balloon Columns in Los Angeles: FAQ
How much do people charge for balloon columns?
With us, a classic column starts at $95, a spiral column at $120, an organic column at $185 and a tower with a number or star topper at $210, each delivered and set in place. Most entrances use a pair.
How many balloons are in a balloon column?
Around 40–60 11-inch balloons for a 5–6 ft classic column, 60–80 for a 7–8 ft column, and 60–100 or more in mixed sizes for an organic column.
What size balloons are used for a balloon column?
Most columns are built from 11-inch latex balloons in clusters of four. Organic columns add 5-inch and 16–18 inch balloons.
How long will balloon columns last?
Filled with air and kept indoors, they hold up for several days. Outside in the shade, figure on a day; in full summer sun in the Valley, just a few hours.
How far in advance can a balloon column be made?
One to two days ahead for an indoor event. Outdoor columns in summer should be set up the same day.
What's the difference between a balloon column, a balloon tower and a balloon pillar?
Nothing that matters. All three names describe a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base. People tend to say "tower" when there's a large topper.
Can balloon columns have a number on top?
Yes. A 34- or 40-inch foil number is the most requested topper, for birthdays, anniversaries and graduation years.
Do balloon columns need helium?
No. Columns are air-filled and held up by the pole and base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium, and helium foil toppers are always weighted.
Will balloon columns blow over outside?
Not when they're weighted and tied off properly. Near the beach and on Santa Ana days we use heavier bases and pick sheltered spots, and in a high-wind warning we'll recommend bringing them inside.
